Mon 7 May 2018. Day trip to Passau

Happy “Birdsday” GirlRob! How lovely to wake to emails, Facebook messages and phonecalls from the girls and the extended family. Couldn’t get through to Dad or son Justin though. Took 10.45am train from Andorf to Passau (Germany), police checking all getting off train, detained middle-eastern looking man and confiscated his luggage. Picked up SIXT hire car for the week, and were upgraded to a classy BMW!

Passau is at the junction of three rivers – the Danube, the Inn and the Ilk. Booked boat trip to Linz for tomorrow and return to Passau by train (could see it would be too difficult to find full day parking as boat terminals are back to back on edge of Old Town, and car-parking officers were doing a sterling trade!) Drove to Scharding Old Town, had Aperol Spritzer toast to birthday, then very ordinary schnitzel lunch. Fortunately the banana split was superb (no Black Forest cake to be found). Enjoyed a walk across footbridge to school, and peeked into old church. Bought avocado and crackers to have for dinner in our room (Monday is hotel’s day off). 

Nice place to have a birthday!

Drove back through Taufkirchen with its tall church. In the evening there was a small procession of older folk, chanting the Rosary and following the priest down laneways.
