Day 11 – Taman Negara to Cherating Point Beach - Wed 6 Mar

Day 11 – Taman Negara to Cherating Point Beach - Wed 6 Mar
On road to East Coast - monkey walked across road with tail in air in distain. These folks are serious about keeping out of their plantations - pictures of guns on fences. Came across Indian/Vishnu temple “2nd largest in Malaysia” on road between Jerenhut and Maran, setting up for festival late March. Can’t believe we took this long before exploring our first temple! Following lunch in Maran, went looking for Gua Charas (cave), Tin Mine and Sg Pandan Waterfall – found the spectacular karst with a large cave but were dubious about crossing the wooden bridge over river. We use Translate app to understand signs eg awas -”beware” (read it  just as we hit deep pothole!).

Arrived at pretty Cherating Point beach, talked to bar owner (Malaysian hippy surfer) who said there'd be no problem camping on “2nd best surfing beach in Malaysia”.  Kids came up and said "hello" over and over just to giggle at our replies. Had wonderful swim in waves in surf – although a little fish kept coming in for a nibble! Went to bar tempted by signs of vodka with fresh juice, but told cheerily "no alcohol, only beer" (may as well ignore menus in Malaysia!) Found best seafood restaurant by checking number of patrons. Picked out our own squid, cockles, fish cooked in banana leaves with ginger or chilli sauce and yellow noodles. Decided to stay an extra day, our first "rest day" (yay sleep- in, but have a list of jobs already!)
